Over the past three and a half years, thousands of us have united for change.
Young people's leadership and power are transforming our communities and our city.
Now, we celebrate the hard-won victories of the last year -- and look forward to a fourth exciting year of movement-building, action, and change!
Victories in 2007
- We secured $500,000 additional City funding for summer jobs, up from $3.8 million in 2006 to $4.3 million in 2007.
- We won a commitment from the City to raise $400,000 in private funds for 150 additional year-round jobs (from September through June).
- We got the City to release $300,000 in summer grants to community-based organizations working with youth.
- We united with community partners to make the City adjust a $3 million State Shannon grant fund, to focus more on prevention and intervention -- with $744,467 going to community-based and faith-based organizations.
- We advocated for more streetworkers, getting the City to increase the streetworker force from 20 to 26, as well as hire 8 Youth Development Specialists to do outreach, case management, and referral work through the Boston Public Health Commission.
- We successfully advocated to increase state funding for youth jobs -- which now includes year-round jobs -- from $4.7 million in 2006 to $6.7 million in 2007.
- We worked with other coalitions to get legislators to create a new State grant program through the Department of Public Health that distributes $2 million across the State for youth development focused, violence prevention initiatives.
