Support Youth Jobs: Calling Your City Councilors

Below is information on which councilors to call and a sample script for you to use. The budget process finishes in about two weeks, and the earlier calls are made, the more impact they will have. Please call today!

To be most effective, we are keeping track of who calls which City Councilors. Please e-mail unitedyouthworkers@yahoo.com to tell us who you have called!

Also view the online petition! (Calling is more important so still make those calls!)

The Main Request

Make sure to say: We are asking City officials to commit $5 million from the City budget to youth jobs for the summer and year-round.

Who To Call

Each person has five city councilors representing them: their one District Councilor and the four At-Large Councilors. To find your District Councilor, visit http://www.cityofboston.gov/whoami/ (If you have trouble finding your councilor, you can also e-mail your full address and ZIP code to unitedyouthworkers@yahoo.com for assistance.)

Please call your District Councilor and all four at-large councilors ... but at least call your District Councilor and one at-large councilor! And again, please e-mail to let us know who you called.

Sample Script

The two most important things to say: "FIVE MILLION dollars for youth jobs", and "I am a constituent who lives/works in the councilor's district."

  • "Hello, may I speak with Councilor _______ or an aide about funding for youth jobs?"
  • "My name is _______ from _______ and I am a constituent of the Councilor (or, my program is in the Councilor's district."
  • "I want to thank the Councilor for his/her positive support of youth." For instance, the City Council has created a committee on youth violence prevention and held hearings and community forums; if you know other positive things your councilors have done, let them know!
  • "I'm calling to support increasing City funding to five million dollars for summer and year-round youth jobs. Restoring this funding will mean decreasing violence and giving young people the skills to succeed in their lives and be leaders in the community." Give an example or elaborate based on your own experience — why are youth jobs important?
  • "Do you know if the Councilor will support increasing funding to five million dollars for youth jobs this year?"
  • "Can I leave my phone number to hear from the Councilor this week what his/her position is?"
  • "Thank you for your time. Would you like my name and address?" (Giving them this information helps show District councilors that you live in their district.)
