We, the undersigned youth, youth workers, and community members, urge City officials to allocate $5 Million from the FY07 City Operating Budget for summer and year-round youth jobs.

The teenage population of Boston is at a peak and violence is at a ten-year high. We must reverse the loss of 3000 youth jobs over the past 5 years and restore City funding!

Youth jobs are crucial to stopping violence. In the short term, they provide a positive alternative to young people of all types -- helping those who have already made negative choices, turn their lives around; and helping other young people who are on the fence, stay positive.

In the long term, jobs build the skills and futures of young people, giving them the tools and relationships to stay positive long after a summer job has finished. Indeed, youth jobs do far more than prevent violence: they invest in young people, giving them the resources to thrive as they become adults and community leaders.

The time to act is now. City officials have already taken positive steps in the effort to stop violence and increase opportunities for youth, including cultivating public-private partnerships, advocating at the State House, funding winter jobs, creating a Summer Jobs Task Force, and holding hearings and community forums on youth violence. We look forward to seeing City officials' further commitment to increase City funding for summer and year-round youth jobs to $5 Million. Please join us in investing in the lives and futures of young people.
