Phone Script for Week of 4/24/06

The Massachusetts House of Representatives votes in the next few days on SIX MILLION DOLLARS FOR YOUTH JOBS — two million more than last year! The vote could come any day - so take 5 minutes to call your Representative at the State House today!

Please forward widely (friends, co-workers, youth programs) and have youth / staff in your program call! Please e-mail unitedyouthworkers@yahoo.com to let us know that you called!

Who To Call

  • Look up your Representative's name here.
  • Call the Switchboard at 617-722-2000 and ask for your Representative, or dial your Representative's number directly.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Representative's office, not to a general committee.

What To Say

Note: You will most likely be talking to an aide, not the Representative.

Give general information and ask/thank for support

  • "I am a constituent in Representative _____'s district calling to support increasing funding for youth jobs in the State budget. Can I speak to an aide about this issue?"
  • "I know that the Boston delegation has made $6 million in youth jobs funding one of their budget priorities. This issue is important to me because _______________."
    • Example: "Jobs have decreased and violence has increased in the past years in Boston. It's important we give youth positive opportunities to stop violence and help them build their strengths instead."
    • Example: "In my neighborhood, this is how youth jobs have helped/would help the teens I know...."
  • "Has Representative ______ signed on to amendments increasing youth jobs funding to $6 million?"
    • "I want to thank Representative ______ for his/her support. Please ask him/her to do everything possible to get youth jobs funding increased." -or-
    • "I urge the Representative to support the amendments to increase youth jobs funding to $6 million. Can I get a call back from the Representative to hear where they stand?"

Give more information if it is helpful

  • "Do you need the line item number and the amendment numbers? I'm supporting $6 million for line item 7002-0012. The amendments are 992 and 1469."
  • "Do you need my phone number or address?" (This shows that you are in their district.)

Closing

  • "Thank you very much and I look forward to seeing youth jobs funding increase!"

Next Steps

  • Please forward widely (friends, co-workers, youth programs) and have youth / staff in your program call!
  • Please e-mail unitedyouthworkers@yahoo.com to let us know that you called.
  • Stay tuned for updates this week about the status of summer jobs funding.
  • After this week, the budget moves to the State Senate, a joint House/Senate conference committee, the Governor's desk, and back to the State House. We may need to continue advocating!
  • The City budget process is also underway, so stay tuned for how to contact your City Councilors.
